The Verona Arena - symbol of the city - is named after the Latin word "sand", which used to cover the entire stalls. It is the third largest roman amphitheatre (after the Coliseum and the amphitheatre of Capua) and it arrived in good conditions to our days.

The history of the Verona Arena remembers the Coliseum of Rome: the arena was used for centuries as a source of building material for the construction of other city buildings. This is the main reason of its current fragmentary status. The Arena was always used for spectacular exhibitions. After the roman period games, during the Middle Ages and up to half of the XVIII century, it was used for jousts and tournaments. The Arena became venue of the most important outdoor opera since 1913: it holds up to 22,000 seats. The large stage allows setting scene seasons, during the summer, with magnificent performances like those regarding Verdi's operas. One of the most important performances that year after year recall the attention of the entire world is Aida.

Today, the Verona Arena has constituted a "foundation": its opera season and its musical and social events can be found at the Arena's ticket office or on the web site. The Agriturismo San Mattia offers to all its guests the entire and updated program of all the Arena's events.
